Protect Your Boat from Rust

Because moisture is the leading cause of rust, it is logical that boats are common victims of rust. Water on its own is bad enough, but when you add saltwater to the equation, you quickly realize that rust can be a big problem for many boat owners. Not only can water do damage, but the moisture in the air (especially sea air) can wreak additional havoc on your boat and its components.

The best way to combat rust is with regular maintenance and prevention. We highly recommend washing the boat off with clean fresh water and a mild detergent after each use. Then dry all metal, glass, and flat surfaces before storing. Keep your boat covered to protect it from sun and rain. In addition, take the time to do routine inspections of your boat and its components to help keep rust and corrosion under control.

There are products available that are extremely helpful in your fight against rust. Boeshield T-9, developed by the Boeing Aircraft Corporation, is a combination of solvents, lubricants, and waxes that was designed for penetration, moisture displacement, lubrication, and protection. Highly effective in marine applications, Boeshield T-9 dries to a thick waxy film that clings to metal. It can protect inboard and outboard engines, electronics, deck hardware, wiring, and more. Furthermore it is non-conductive and will not cause short circuits. Unlike some sprays, it is safe on paint, plastics, and vinyl. As an added benefit it will also loosen rusty and corroded parts. To keep your boat rust and mildew free during storage, you should eliminate excess moisture in the storage area. One way to do this is to store your boat in a climate-controlled unit. A second way is to run a dehumidifier in the unit. And the third, most cost-effective way is to use a moisture control product such as our rechargeable silica gel packs.
