Removing Rust From Kitchen Stainless Steel

Removing Rust on Kitchen Stainless Steel

While stainless steel itself rarely rusts, it is susceptible to rust staining by other objects found in the kitchen. We found a rust stain in a stainless steel sink that had a cast iron pan left in it. While removing the rust stain was more difficult than expected, there is an easy way to do it.

The best method that we’ve found is to use Citrisurf® 77 Plus. This rust remover is designed to work specifically on stainless steel.

To use Citrisurf 77 Plus on stainless steel just apply the product to the rust stained surface. Let the rust remover work for half an hour, and then wash off with water. Not only will this product remove the rust but it will help keep it from rusting in the future.

Using Citrisurf 77 Plus has advantages over traditional abrasive methods. First, this method is very quick to apply. Secondly, and most important, is the end result. Using abrasive methods can lead to a sanded looking finish on the rust stained area. Keeping the original finish on the stainless steel is important to the overall appearance of the stainless steel.

As you can see in the photo, the stainless steel sink is cleaned of the rust stain and it has retained its original appearance.

Why does rust form on stainless steel?
The kitchen is an ideal place for rust to form; that is one of the reasons many kitchens feature stainless steel appliances, pans, and utensils. However, there are some items in the kitchen that are not made of stainless steel. In the example above, the rust stain was left by a cast iron pan. By leaving a wet cast iron or steel pan in contact with a stainless steel sink, the ideal conditions are created for the pan to rust and stain the sink.
