Washing Machine Rust

While doing some laundry I found there are rust marks on the clothes. Our washer is probably 15 years old. The marks look like they could be from the holes in the washer tub. The holes don't look to be rusted though. I was wondering if there was something I could run through the washer to remove rust if that is what it is? Do I need to buy a new washer?

This is something that we have tried to find a practical solution to but have been unsuccessful. With something like a washing machine drum, the drum once rusted is so full of ridges and holes that rust removal would be difficult. Even if the rust was removed, it quickly rusts again without redoing the original protective finish.
